La joute Lyonnaise est organisée depuis 16ème siècle. Les tabagnons ou bâteaux se croisent à babord. Le jouteur est installé jambes tendues, à la limite du grand écart, sur la plateforme arrière. Le jouteur tient sa lance à deux mains pour toucher le centre du plastron de son adversaire dans le but d'essayer de le faire tomber.
