Le ski de randonnée, ski d'alpinisme ou ski de montagne se pratique dans des espaces enneigés et généralement sauvages, qui ne sont pas accessibles avec des remontées mécaniques. C'est un ski respectueux de la nature, puisque ne transformant pas et n'adaptant pas le terrain à la pratique du ski de piste.
Il comprend deux étapes, la montée puis la descente. A cet effet, il requière un matériel spécifique. Pour la montée les skis sont équipés de "peau de phoque" évitant le recul en arrière, les chaussures sont plus souples, se débrayent à l'arrière facilitant la marche avec les skis. Les fixations se détachent à l'arrière et pivotent sur l'avant. A la descente les fixations sont bloquées afin de pratiquer un ski alpin. Dans certaines conditions, le portage des skis et le passage de parois pentues sont obligatoires, alors un équipement plus complet est nécessaire.
