Un maelstrom ou trou noir de l'océan, est une masse d’eau tourbillonnante produite par la rencontre de courants opposés. Il peut être créé par un courant de marée ou par le courant d'un fleuve. Le maelstrom de Saltstraumen est parmi les plus puissants du monde, situé dans un détroit de Norvège entre les îles de Straumoya et de Knaplundsoya qui forment le rétrécissement du Saltfjord propice au maelstrom de courants de marée.
