Avignon situé dans le sud de la France est traversé par le Rhône, les premières fortifications furent édifiées au Vème siècle av-JC. Le premier pont en bois fut construit au IIIème siècle ap-JC. C'est en 1309, sous Clément V qu'Avignon devient la résidence pontificale, Jean XXII en fait le siège de la chrétienté, il transforme le palais épiscopal en premier palais des papes, le palais Vieux sera construit sous Benoît XII et le palais Neuf sous Clément VI. Innocent VI dota le palais de remparts. Neuf papes se succédèrent dans le palais des papes, enrichissant chacun le palais pendant leur pontificat.
Le pont Bénézet ou pont d'Avignon fut longtemps le seul pont permettant de traverser le Rhône. Construit au XII ème siècle, il était formé de vingt-deux arches, avant de céder à plusieurs reprises sous les crues du Rhône.
L'aviron est un sport d'équilibre, de glisse et de vitesse très exigeant. Il requière aux rameurs de l'endurance, il est comparable à une épreuve de demi-fond en athlétisme. Le bateau est effilé, les avirons servent à propulser le bateau, alors que les rameurs sont dos au sens d'avancement du bateau, le barreur est chargé de diriger le bateau, ainsi que de coordonner le rythme et la force des rameurs.
